Coaching Staff
BJ Warren, Head Coach
BJ Warren has been instructing and encouraging swimmers in the Aqua Racers program since 2001. His enthusiasm up on the pool deck rubs off and stays with his wet swimmers below. A native of Michigan, BJ was introduced to the water at the age of seven and continued his swimming career with one of the state’s elite swim programs at East Grand Rapids High. To escape the rigors of snow shoveling, Coach BJ moved south where he attended TCU, earning an undergraduate degree in Teaching Education. He continued his collegiate career at West Virginia University where he was awarded a graduate degree in Athletic Coaching Education. He also coached for the WVU swim team while in graduate school. Upon returning to the Dallas area, BJ led varsity swim programs at R.L. Turner High and Plano West High where several of his athletes continued their swimming careers at the collegiate level. During his high school coaching tenure, he trained seven All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans and numerous All-American Consideration swimmers. Steeped in Aqua Racers tradition, Coach BJ grows a handle-bar mustache toward the end of each swim season - a sort of whiskered Texas horseshoe - as a good-luck gesture to his swimmers who qualify for the Summer Games. No rabbit's foot needed.
Lindsey Davis, Assistant Coach
As a home-grown Aqua Racer, Lindsey Davis began swimming at the age of five. She continued her development as a swimmer at Hebron High where she lettered four years and earned all-region honors with accomplishments in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Following high school, Lindsey attended SFASU where she was awarded a B.S in Education. She currently teaches middle school in Northwest ISD and will coach swimming this fall at Byron Nelson High. Returning for her fourth year as an Aqua Racers coach, Lindsey is rewarded when her swimmers develop and improve each season. "I love meets. Even though they are long and hot, I love seeing the kids drop their times and place higher," she notes. The big news in Coach Lindsey's life is that she recited vows with husband Chris in March. So if she seems to be walking on air across the pool this summer ... now you know why!
Kenneth Wherry, Assistant Coach
As a second-year coach with the Aqua Racers, Coach Kenneth brings a wealth of experience to the team. As a local product of R.L. Turner High, Kenneth was a three-time all-district swimmer, earned second team all-state honors in the 500 freestyle, and was an academic all-American. He also competed with the Dallas Mustangs during his junior years. After high school, Kenneth continued his swimming career at USC before returning to Texas where he swam with TCU under coach Richard Sybesma. During Kenneth’s tenure with TCU, the men’s swim team won three consecutive C-USA championships. Kenneth was recognized for his individual accomplishments in the 200 butterfly, 400 IM and distance freestyle events while swimming with the Horned Frogs. As a TCU alum, Kenneth holds a BBA in Marketing and Communications.
Joyce Curry, Assistant Coach
Although not new to Aqua Racers, Joyce (Jo) Curry joins the coaching staff this season with a focus on instructing stroke basics to beginners and technique efficiency to advanced swimmers. For most of her life, Jo has either trained in the pool or coached swimming – highly influenced by her mother Kathi Rayborn who served as head coach of Aqua Racers for 16 years. From the age of four through her high school years, Jo competed with various recreational and USA swim clubs in California and Texas. During her collegiate years at SFASU, Jo lettered in volleyball with the Ladyjacks, but she never strayed too far from the pool. She has donned the Aqua Racers swim cap for several recent seasons, and her 2004 time in the 50-yard freestyle at the T.A.A.F. Summer Games remains a record. For the past six years, Jo has instructed swimmers at Lifetime Fitness. With a doctorate degree in nutrition and exercise physiology, Jo can explain how to restore that muscle glycogen for improved endurance in the pool. Just be ready to take notes.
Nina Lim, Assistant Coach
Coach Nina returns for her second year on the Aqua Racers staff, and ninth year as an Aqua Racers competitor. Nina credits her current and former Aqua Racers coaches for developing her passion for the water. An accomplished swimmer who lettered four years at Newman Smith High, Nina established a personal best this year with a sub one-minute time in the 100 yard freestyle. Although she’ll be attending the coach’s deck at meets this summer, Nina’s competitiveness will likely land her in water for a race or two. Following her high school graduation and Aqua Racers summer, Nina will attend Texas State University where she plans to major in Sports Science and Exercise.
